Conceptual model accounting for aquitard storage

Leaky aquifer system with account for aquitard storage

Assumptions:

leaky aquifer system: confined aquifer system consisting of three layers – two isotropic aquifers separated by aquitard;

main aquifer (1) is penetrated by the pumping well;

adjacent aquifer (2) leaks into the main aquifer, its water level may be constant or alternate during the test period;

boundary: aquifer has infinite areal extent;

pumping well is fully penetrating, located in the main aquifer;

drawdown can be estimated in the main as well as in the adjacent aquifer and in the aquitard at any distance from the pumping well;

crossflow through the aquitard is vertical;

storage of the aquitard is included.

c        d

Leaky aquifer system (3-layered) with account for aquitard storage: a – pumping well in the bottom of the aquifer system; b – pumping well in the top of the aquifer system; c, d  – semi-infinite aquitard

Pumping regimes:

One well pumped at a constant rate

Pumping

Recovery

One or several wells pumped at a variable rate
